Learn the Craft with Confidence

If you want to move beyond a single creative experience and truly understand the stained-glass process, this path is designed to take you there.

Stained glass is learned through practice. Cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering become more comfortable and consistent with repetition. Beginning with smaller projects gives you the opportunity to develop those skills, build confidence and craftsmanship, and understand how each part of the process affects the finished piece before moving on to larger and more complex work.

Art of Stained Glass – An Introduction provides the strongest foundation, with guided instruction and additional practice throughout the complete stained-glass process. You'll first create a small sailboat to practice each step, then apply what you've learned to a small stained-glass panel—all in the same class. The additional hands-on practice builds the skills and confidence needed to move directly into a Standard Panel Workshop and continue to larger, more complex projects.

However, if you've already completed one of our Suncatcher Workshops, you don't need to start over. A Small Panel Workshop provides the additional practice needed before progressing to a Standard Panel and larger projects.

My goal is not simply to help you finish a project. It is to help you understand what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how to make good decisions as you become more confident and independent in your work.

Step One:
The Art of Stained Glass – An Introduction

$110 per person • 4 hours

This is the starting point for learning stained glass at The Glass Patch.

You’ll create two projects while learning the foundational skills of cutting, shaping, foiling, soldering, and assembling stained glass. The first small practice piece gives you room to learn the tools and techniques before moving into an approximately eight- to nine-piece panel.

The class is intentionally paced so you can practice, ask questions, and begin understanding not just how each step works, but why it matters.

You’ll leave with two finished pieces and the foundation you need to continue through the Learn the Art path.

Step Two:

Standard Panel Workshop

$150 per person • 4 hours of guided studio time • 9–16 pieces

Now it’s time to take what you learned in the Intro and apply it to a project that is more your own.

Choose an approved pattern, select your glass, and work through the full stained-glass process with guidance available throughout the session.

The Panel Workshop gives you more opportunity to make decisions, solve problems, and strengthen your technique while still having an instructor beside you when you need help.

Standard glass, vinyl pattern, regular studio consumables, and hobby or zinc came needed for the agreed project are included.

Prerequisite: The Art of Stained Glass – An Introduction, Small Panel Workshop, or approved prior experience.

Piece counts are used as a general guide. Completion time varies by pattern complexity, glass choice, and individual working pace. Additional time needed to complete the project may be booked as Finishing Time.

Step Three:

Glass Class Certificate Program

$475 per person • Four 3-hour classes + 3 hours of Finishing Time

The Glass Class Certificate Program is a structured learning experience for students who want a broader understanding of stained-glass tools, materials, techniques, and finishing.

Over four sessions, we slow the process down and explore the parts of stained glass that are easy to rush past when you’re focused only on finishing a project.

You’ll work through two to three stained-glass projects, approximately 25 pieces in total, while developing a stronger understanding of glass selection, cutting and shaping, foiling, soldering, finishing, tools, and studio practices.

The program includes:

12 hours of guided instruction
Two to three stained-glass projects (approximately 25 pieces in total)
Four additional hours of finishing time
Standard materials and consumables
A $16 glass allowance for project materials
A printed program manual
Certificate of completion

Cohorts are intentionally small, with 2–4 students, allowing for individual instruction as well as the benefit of learning alongside other makers.

Move on to a Larger Project
